Sacral Chakra – Svadhishthana

(Sanskrit: स्वाधिष्ठान, IASTSvādhiṣṭhāna, English: “the residence of the self”) or sacral chakra believed to be located at the root of the sexual organ along the spine in the subtle body.[

It is symbolised as a six-petaled lotus. Svadhisthana is represented with a lotus within which is a crescent moon symbolizing the water element. The seed mantra in its center is Vam representing water. The presiding deity is Brahma, with the Shakti being Rakini (or Chakini).

In esoteric Buddhism, it is called Nirmana and is generally considered to be the petal lotus of “Creation” and corresponding to the first state of Four Noble Truths.

Sacral Chakra Characteristics:

The six petals represent the following modes of consciousness, also known as vrittis: affection, pitilessness, feeling of all-destructiveness, delusion, disdain and suspicion.

Svadhishthana is associated with the unconscious and with emotion. It is closely related to the Muladhara in that Muladhara is where the different samskaras (potential Karmas) lie dormant, and Svadhisthana is where these Samskaras find expression. It is associated with the element of water, the sense of taste and the act of procreation.

Svadhishthana contains unconscious desires, especially sexual desire.

The sacral chakra is associated with the following psychological and behavioral functions:

  • Emotions, feelings
  • Relationships, relating
  • Expression of sexuality, sensual pleasure
  • Feeling the outer and inner worlds
  • Creativity
  • Fantasies

What happens when Sacral Chakra is Imbalanced?

When the third chakra is closed down, one may feel tired, afraid, shaky, quiet, or withdrawn. There is a fear of taking risks, confronting people or issues, taking charge, and with all this, a lack of energy. There may be too much seriousness and not enough laughter, ease, or fun, all of which help the third chakra open and relax. Pleasure, from the chakra below, helps make the fire warm and easy; without it, our fires are cold and hard.

When the sacral chakra is balanced, the relationship with the world and other people is centered around nurturing, pleasure, harmonious exchange.

Imbalance in the sacral chakra can manifest as:

  • Dependency, co-dependency with other people or a substance that grants you easy access to pleasure
  • Being ruled by your emotions
  • The opposite: Feeling numb, out of touch with yourself and how you feel
  • Overindulgence in fantasies, sexual obsessions
  • Or the opposite: Lack of sexual desire or satisfaction
  • Feeling stuck in a particular feeling or mood
  • premenstrual syndrome
  • anemia
  • hypoglycemia (low blood sugar)
  • lower back pain
  • joint problems
  • spleen and kidney issues
  • low energy
Chakra Chart

You may feel that the entire world starts appearing as a foe and at every instance of life. You may start feeling the sense of a potential threat or everyone is out to get you. Many people with an imbalanced root chakra feel they are unsure about the future and generally feel unmotivated to do anything or get going to accomplish goals.

SIMPLE WAYS TO OPEN YOUR SECOND CHAKRA

It is obvious that maintenance and opening of different chakras can be different and here we are quite focused on the ways to maintain and opening the root chakra.

Citrine Bracelet
  1. Sacral Chakra Stones and Jewelry for Healing purpose: Many people feel that wearing a stone which is well energized will help in opening your sacral chakra.  The chakra color for Swadhisthana is orange and it is tied to the moon, so orange and yellow gems are good for opening the sacral chakra. Crystals that open and activate the second chakra include: Orange calcite, Citrine, Orange Carnelian, Orange Adventurine
  2. Find Your Groove: One way of opening the sacral chakra is to dance. Moving your body helps heal the second chakra by getting your body’s energy flowing, which activates the chakra and removes blockages.
  3. Awaken Your Senses: Essential oils are a great, simple way to open up blocked chakras. Try introducing pleasant scents associated with the sacral chakra to your home, office, and other personal spaces. From citrusy and floral to more subtle, earthy fragrances, adding a hint of scent can make a world of difference in helping to open, cleanse, and balance the second chakra. To help heal chakra imbalance, consider using one or more of these essential oils:
    • Patchouli
    • Ylang-Ylang
    • Bergamot
    • Sandalwood
    • Clary Sage
    • Jasmine
    • Orange
    • Rose
  4. Think (and See) Orange: Introduce subtle to bright shades of orange to your office and home decor to help heal, activate and open up energy flow through the second chakra. Add a touch of warming orange to your wardrobe and maybe introduce some healing, earthy orange tones to your jewelry and accessories. Meditating on the color orange is another great way to not only heal and activate the sacral chakra, but also improve your focus and concentration.
  5. Unpack Your Bags: Learning to let go can be difficult. Emotional baggage, even if it’s just the size of a carry-on, can weigh you down. Consider journaling or simply talking with a close friend about all that’s bothering you. It’s amazing how much better you feel when you vocalize and let go of repressed emotions and experiences.
  6. Open Up the Hips: The sacral chakra is directly tied to our ability to experience pleasure and express our emotions in a healthy way. Learning how to open and strengthen our second chakra through exercise can also help heal imbalance. When exploring options for exercises that benefit the sacral chakra, consider yoga.
  7. Reiki: Considering having a Reiki treatment. Sometimes you need a little more help to open up the chakra and help align energies inside the body. Reiki is a non-intrusive practice that works with your bodies own energies to get them flowing naturally.

If the chakra is too open, then we have a kind of bully archetype-someone who always needs to be in control, to dominate, to seek power, prestige, ambition. As the lower chakras in general are more ego -oriented, third chakra excess can make a person narcissistic or self-centered.
